This is a critical break-through for me; a tipping point.
I have listened to many artists on A Strangely Isolated Place, Fluid Radio and the people I follow on SoundCloud like Ran Kirlian and Neonlogic and the question in my mind since day one has been, “How on earth do you make those giant droning sounds?” I messed around with Ableton Live and it wasn’t obvious.
I think the answer is that there are many different ways and I’m very pleased I’ve found a method that works for me.
In pictorial terms, my palette is now complete. It’s as if I had all the highlights and body colours from my guitar and Ableton but now I have the washes and background layers as well.
This track is actually nothing more than three chords played on a guitar and stretched and processed electronically. Oh, and there are some wind chimes in there too but there is no MIDI at all.
I only used Ableton as a sequencer and for an audio effect on one track. The whole thing is almost purely analogue.
Taking my cue from the immense distortions of time employed on this track I wanted a title that suggested this. I toyed with the title, “Three Chords In Geological Time”, but ultimately settled for what you see.
I do want to make some dance music as well but having opened this particular flood-gate I think there might be more where this came from first.
